Artist's Information
John Haig is a Vancouver-based artist who finds infinite inspiration in the natural environment surrounding him. He adapts, “the inherent creative processes found in nature…” with a unique and visually compelling style to create striking interpretations of the British Columbia wilderness. Haig has been in numerous exhibitions both solo and group, and his work have been featured in publications, including Pamela McColl’s Whistler-Garibaldi, A Painter’s View.
“The painting of landscapes has always suited my need to express the interconnectedness of things so it has been my genre of choice. As far as subject matter I have tended to use location as themes, such as areas of the Queen Charlottes, Whistler Garibaldi, and the Sunshine Coast. Currently I am inspired by the woods of Stoney Creek which meanders around the base of Burnaby Mountain where I live. The repetition affirms my love of pattern while the trails are reminiscent of both the traveler on his journey and the pilgrim on his quest.”
His work references the dynamic, rhythmic and flowing characteristics of Art Nouveau, exploring push and pull relationships. “With pattern and repetition I try to give visual unity to the dichotomies of light and dark, rest and action, form and void, and by doing so, find that our place in nature is as transformative as the natural world we engage in.”
