Artist's Information
Deb Garlick graduated in 1995 with a major in both Art History and Visual Arts. She is an internationally published photographer and artist with work in private collections across Canada and the United States.
Garlick uses colour, line and composition to create her mood of distinctive solitude and quietness, resting the eye of the viewer. There is an underlying complexity and introspection in her work that is interpreted through both stillness and simplicity. This reflects her fascination with distilling frenetic inner emotion into simple elegant statements and in the artist’s words, “It is about creating the stillness necessary to experience something and feel it.” and, “It’s not about who the person is, it’s about everything that makes them who they are. The expression of self reaches beyond our physical being, and so my figures reach beyond the canvas and are placed timelessly.”
The figures are anonymous and stretch off the canvas to express the lack of containment that thoughts, feelings and memories have. The minimalist landscape and palette are used to create an endlessness and interplay between time and feelings, atmosphere and introspection.
