Artist's Information
Philip Cottell was born in Ladysmith on Vancouver Island. After many years away working in forestry and wood products research, he returned to the Island in 1997 and took up woodturning. Cottell is a natural to wood turning with his extensive knowledge and love of wood. He has attended many wood seminars and symposia’s where he has been exposed to many of the world’s great turners, learning about the art form and techniques to feed his creative expression. His pieces range from organic burl bowls and sculptural vessels to coloured, wall-hung plaques that take their cues from the wood grain. Cottell particularly enjoys creating beautiful as well as useful objects utilizing salvaged wood from local trees—Maple, Arbutus, Dogwood, Cedar and others. He is a member of several woodworking groups, and is currently holding a directors position on the Vancouver Island Woodworkers’Guild.
